Abstract:
Ion traps are tools used in a variety of scientific contexts to isolate and control simple quantum systems. Graulab, being a relatively new lab, did not have one. In this thesis, I present the steps taken to design, model, build, and use a simple linear Paul trap for the purposes of trapping barium, lutetium, and lutetium hydroxide. The lab plans to use this ion trap to perform fundamental measurements in service of the search for the electron electric dipole moment as well as construct qubits with a promising new species. I will also discuss the design of the ion trap currently being used at JILA and give a description of resonant behavior that can come from their design.
